Top 12 Japanese Supermarkets in Singapore for Oishi Meals

On my first visit to a Japanese supermarket in the Lion City, I was just on a mission to make the perfect bowl of ramen. I got carried away and left with the ramen ingredients, a month’s supply of mochi, and every flavour of Pocky I could find!

Whether you’re a Japanese expat craving a taste of home, a sushi enthusiast, or someone who loves matcha-flavoured treats, this guide will point you towards the best Japanese supermarkets in Singapore.

You don’t have to go to expensive Japanese restaurants anymore to get a taste of Nippon!

DON DON DONKI

I enjoy visiting Don Don Donki at Clarke Quay to explore unfamiliar Japanese products (I like living dangerously) and occasionally have lunch at the counter. Everything tastes fresh and it’s great to be surrounded by imported goods and produce when I eat.

Watching the chef prepare our meal at the cooking counter is always a treat, especially when we order beef fried rice and fried eggs. I also love browsing the sashimi section for slices of sashimi and sushi cheaper than those in restaurants.

Pro-tip: There’s free Wi-Fi so you can post your Instagram-worthy Japanese meal.

Fish Mart Sakuraya

Fish Mart SAKURAYA on Marine Parade Road may be a bit old, but it offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that makes up for the need for sleeker interiors. I love the salmon sashimi here—just choose it fresh from the chiller, and they’ll slice it up for you.

My mom insisted on trying their premium saba fish; it’s the best I’ve had, with a thick and juicy texture. The place also has a great collection of affordable sake and Japanese whiskey for those looking to get a bottle or two.

Pro-tip: Dining time is limited to 90 minutes due to the limited seating available.

Kuriya Japanese Market

Kuriya Japanese Market is known for its fresh seafood selection, offering a wide range of high-quality fish and shellfish, perfect for sushi and sashimi lovers. The variety extends to imported Japanese snacks, condiments, and ready-to-eat meals.

I was immediately drawn to the sashimi counter, where the staff recommended their freshest catch. I chose a selection of salmon and tuna that tasted like it had been flown in straight from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market.

Pro-tip: Kuriya has regular promotions on seasonal seafood, so keep your eyes peeled for them.

Ginkakuji Onishi

I occasionally go to Ginkakuji Onishi to buy beef because it’s good quality and reasonably priced. Sometimes, you can even snag a deep discount. Once, I got 850 g of A5 Kyoto beef Miyabi at a great price for the size!

I also tried the menchi katsu (Japanese-style ground meat cutlet), which was amazing. I asked them to fry it for me, and it came out perfectly crispy and juicy.

Pro-tip: The patient staff can answer questions about the meat and other stock for different recipes, so ask away.

Meidi-Ya Supermarket

Hours: Daily, 9.30 AM–10 PM

I’m not exaggerating when I say everything at Meidi-Ya Supermarket is fresh and either Japanese or Japanese-inspired, from sushi to sake and other branded products. Prices are a bit high, but I think it’s worth it for the quality and variety.

I love coming after 7 PM for cafe discounts. The draft beers are good, too, though the selection is limited.

Pro-tip: Meidi-Ya is tucked away on B2 and can be accessed via the mall’s only travelator.

Iroha Mart

When craving snacks, I head to Iroha Mart for Japanese confectionery, tidbits, and instant noodles. I love hunting for uniquely flavoured potato chips and dark chocolate here, and I’m never disappointed.

The shop regularly brings in new items from Japan, offering a wide variety at reasonable prices. You can also get Japanese fruits and vegetables in season.

Pro-tip: Occasionally, you can find great deals at the bargain counter, with items as low as S$2 per pack.

My friend loves Zairyo for its great quality ingredients that arrive fresh at her doorstep. It’s her go-to for sashimi dinner parties that feed up to six people for a fraction of the cost of an omakase experience.

Intrigued, I tried ordering myself, and the fish was top-notch. I got some black wild-caught cod and saba teriyaki fillets, whose quality rivalled that of expensive Japanese restaurants.

Pro-tip: Zairyo also offers steamboat sets for rainy nights.

J-mart

J-mart is a paradise for Japanese food lovers, offering everything from seasonings and ready-made meals to desserts. My bestie loves the little Japanese sausages sold here for snacking.

And a heads-up if you’re a fan of natto (fermented soybeans): I found that they have the cheapest natto in Singapore! So come on over and get your healthy protein and fibre fix at J-mart.

Pro-tip: Get a 6% discount on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of each month.

OosterBay

We love oysters and OosterBay is my go-to for Hyogo oysters for our weekly family dinners. The delivery is always on time, and the oysters arrive well-packed and still frozen.

The oysters are easy to thaw by rinsing them under running water for a few minutes, and I can open them with a small spoon. The oysters are super plump and firm and have a rich taste—just how we like them.

Pro-tip: OosterBay can accommodate last-minute orders!

Shiki Singapore

I’ve been ordering from Shiki since the COVID lockdown, and the shop’s delivery has been consistently reliable. The quality of its rich and creamy uni has always impressed me which is saying something because I eat so much of the stuff.

For a recent party, I bought two boxes of uni, and they were a hit—delicious, high-quality, and affordable all at once. Everything arrived well-sealed in a styrofoam box with plenty of ice packs to ensure freshness.

Pro-tip: Shiki Singapore also carries scallops and ikura (salmon roe), also available for delivery.

Kodawari Singapore

Sometimes, I just don’t have the time or energy to go out shopping, so I need a supermarket delivery service that’s reliable. Thankfully, Kodawari’s delivery team is both dependable and friendly, keeping in close communication throughout the process.

I appreciate that the goods are neatly packed with great temperature control. Its selection is fantastic, offering everything from fresh produce to hard-to-find Japanese specialities for when I need to follow a complex recipe to a T.

Pro-tip: Keep an eye out for the shop’s seasonal offerings and special promotions.

Kurara

I visit Kurara occasionally to buy ice cream since the store offers unique flavours and brands I can’t find in other Japanese markets. I’m always on the lookout for matcha ice cream and I’m sometimes lucky to find it here.

For some reason, the snacks sold here don’t make me feel guilty, even if they’re technically sweets. The butter cookies are perfectly tasty, fresh, and not dry at all, with no artificial taste.

Beyond food, you can also find some Japanese cooking items, snacks, and a gift shop so it’s fun to browse through the store even if you aren’t buying anything.

Pro-tip: Kurara also has a vast selection of sake that will leave you spoiled for choice.
