So if you’re hungry and on a budget, here are some of the best stalls to try in Haig Road Hawker Centre, which we made sure to sample ourselves (armed with huge appetites and slim wallets!).

HJ Waliti HJ Mazuki at Haig Road Market & Food Centre in Singapore is a popular spot known for its authentic Malay cuisine. It’s been around for over half a century!
The extensive menu includes favourites like nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk), mee rebus (yellow egg noodles in gravy), lontong (steamed rice cakes), ikan bakar (marinated grilled fish), add sambal sotong (spicy cuttlefish).
Delightful desserts such as cendol and kuih lapis are also available. To up the authenticity, the cosy eatery features traditional Malay art and decorations.
Pro-tip: Try this place if you prefer your mee rebus beefier and more curry-like.

As its name implies, Lin Yu Mei Kolo Mee is a stall specialising in kolo mee (S$4 for a small bowl, S$5 for a large one).
It’s rare to find kolo mee (thin Sarawak noodles) in these parts, and the bowl we had featured char siew (BBQ pork), crispy pork lard, and simmered minced meat that was tasty.
But the shop also offers a piquant Sarawak laksa (S$6 per bowl) with a unique broth made with coconut milk and tamarind paste. The tamarind gives it a tangy flavour but it’s not too overwhelmingly sour because of the coconut flavour.
Pro-tip: Imported directly from Sarawak, the noodles are exceptionally springy, coated with a flavourful layer of oil and seasoning.

Featured in Michelin Guide, Netflix’s Street Food Asia, and more, Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring is a renowned stall at Haig Road Market & Food Centre.
Its simple yet perfectly executed putu piring (soft rice cake), made of rice flour, gula melaka (palm sugar), and grated coconut, has gained the kind of popularity that results in long queues.
Though maintaining its shape when picked up, the putu piring is crumbly and quickly dissolves in the mouth.
Pro-tip: Nuts about coconut? You won’t feel cheated, as the stall provides a generous amount to cover four servings!
Zhenguang Wantan Noodles

Formerly at Hin Hollywood Canteen, Zhenguang Wantan Noodles is an established eatery of over 50 years that serves its signature wantan (Chinese dumplings) noodles. Its sauce combines the flavours of peanut oil, fried lard, garlic, and scallions.
For extra bite, dumplings are available at an additional S$0.60 each. Also, the owner is a friendly auntie who chats up customers as she serves them.
Pro-tip: Be sure to arrive early, as the noodles often sell out by noon!

The meat is marinated with various spices and lemongrass, producing flavourful, tender, and charred skewers. But the highlight for us is the thick, rich peanut sauce with a delightful crunch from peanut bits.
Pro-tip: Fancy something more exotic on a skewer? Try the tripe, which is also beautifully marinated.

Simple dishes are elevated with freshness, quality, and taste. For instance, the radish with pork ribs soup was delightful—light, and fragrant, with the meat effortlessly sliding off the bones!
Pro-tip: The steamed threadfin belly is a must-try at this place, but it has a seasonal price due to availability.
Anisah’s Curry Puff

Claypot enthusiasts should seriously consider heading over to V2 Claypot Corner for affordable and delicious claypot dishes. Its signature clay pot rice (from S$4) has ample rice, chicken, Chinese sausage, and vegetables.
The smokiness can be tasted not only in the rice but also in the chicken. And there’s no thick layer of burnt rice to turn your nose up at!

Jing Jia Mutton Soup offers a daily menu featuring lamb brain and meatball soup, mixed soup, mutton soup, and tendon soup.
We were pleasantly surprised that the mutton pieces were fresh, soft, and well-prepared, lacking the usual pungent smell or taste associated with this meat.
If you’re feeling extra adventurous, the mixed option includes various meat parts, and the soup is rich and creamy with a generous amount of meat.
Pro-tip: Bring a hefty appetite because the shop doesn’t provide small bowls for sharing.
