You’ll need to try the nasi ayam penyet (smashed fried chicken with rice) at Papa Ayam if you’re a chillihead. The chicken is super fragrant and crispy and has a nice incendiary bite to it.

Also, it comes with fish crackers and cucumber, adding that extra crunch to the dish.

You can choose your sambal spice level, all the way up to level 15 (double-dare ya!). And if you don’t feel like having rice, you can choose to have the ayam penyet with Indomie (instant noodles) instead.

Pro-tip: There’s an additional S$1 charge for sambal with spice level 11 onwards.

Grilled Chilli Fish at Tan Yu

My family and I often go to Tan Yu for the delicious signature green pepper fish. It’s a bit fiery, and the fish is always fresh. We simply love the grilled sea bass with green chilli—perfect with rice.

I recommend trying the spicy Sichuan style, which balances heat and flavour perfectly. The fish is served on a boat-shaped platter, making it a fun and unique dining experience.

Pro-tip: Get the fresh vegetables and tofu, as they complement the fish dish nicely.

Mochi Desserts at Nam Dae Mun

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #B3-54

Contact: +6565094658

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–10 PM

Price: $

Website

Nam Dae Mun offers unique Korean desserts. I tried the mango sago and sweet red bean sticky rice cake for the first time. The mango mochi was fresh with a thin, refreshing skin and best eaten immediately from the chiller.

The sticky rice cake had a great texture, and the mango sago was delicious. As for beverages: if you’re not into milk tea, there are plenty of other sweet treats and boba flavours to enjoy.

Pro-tip: Ask the staff about the unique features of each option and clarify which contains alcohol.

Plant-Based Burger at Privé

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #01-28

Hours: Daily, 10 AM–11 PM

Price: $$

Website

Having a vegan bestie means always looking for a place that serves both plant-based (for her) and meat-centred (for me) meals. So we thank our lucky stars that there’s Privé, whose plant-based patty burger I actually love.

On its menu are other great vegetarian options as well as mouth-watering carnivore and pescetarian mains like umami fish and chips and pulled pork burgers.

And if you feel like tippling at the bar, try the delicious Long Island Tea, prepared by the bartender who is engaging and pleasant.

Pro-tip: Some menu items can be switched to plant-based options, like chickpeas instead of poached eggs for the avocado toast.

Meatball Noodles at GO Noodle House

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #B3-37/38

Hours: Sunday to Thursday, 11.30 AM–9.30 PM; Friday to Saturday, 11.30 AM–10 PM

The meatball noodles have a delicious blend of flavours at GO Noodle House. I ordered bee hoon (rice vermicelli) with beef balls, beef slices, pork balls, and extra veggies. It came in a big bowl with a generous portion.

The meatballs were well-seasoned, and the noodles had a satisfying springy texture. You have the option to add a splash of optional Shaoxing wine. Don’t skip it!

Note to self (and to you): if you add extras, make sure you’re really hungry, or at least have someone to share with.

Pro-tip: Try the fishball noodle version if you’re a pescatarian.

Acai Bowl at Haakon Superfoods & Juice

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #B2-14

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Daily, 10 AM–9.30 PM

Price: $

Website

I’m glad Haakon Superfoods & Juice is in Somerset for when I want healthy food instead of the usual fast food. Its acai bowls and protein platters with grains and veggies are perfect for an energetic, balanced meal.

I also highly recommend the poke bowl. The fresh salmon with mentaiko sauce is excellent. Plenty of dressing ensured it wasn’t too dry with the brown rice and lettuce, which ended with me scraping the bottom of the bowl for every last bit.

Pro-tip: Haakon is self-service with options for set meals or DIY.

Char-Grilled Chicken at Josh’s Grill

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, B2-15 to 19

Contact: +6562350594

Hours: Daily, 11.30 AM–10 PM

Price: $$

Website

At Josh’s Grill, I first noticed the laid-back charm with cowboy-themed decor and warm lighting. The second thing of note is the char-grilled chicken which arrived perfectly bronzed and juicy, packed with smoky flavour with a piquant onion sauce.

I especially like the side dishes—mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and corn. The mushroom soup is incredible too and goes well with the chicken.

The restaurant also serves free soft buns and butter while you wait, plus colouring paper and crayons to keep kids entertained.

Pro-tip: Order via QR to make the process simple and hassle-free.

Skewers at JiBiru Yakitori & Craft Beer

JiBiru Yakitori & Craft Beer is our after-office go-to to blow off some steam. The tempura here is light, the skewered meats are delicious and happy hour pints are less than S$10.

The karaage is perfectly marinated and fried, with just the right texture for that crunchy chicken bite. It’s my personal “just the usual” because it’s so good and comforting.

And if you like craft beer, prepare to blow a gasket here, as there are rotational taps for tipplers to enjoy. I spied some labels from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Scotland, England, Denmark, the USA, Canada, and Australia when I was there.

Pro-tip: Ask the bartender for excellent skewer and craft beer pairings if you don’t know where to start.

Salmon Sushi at Sushi Express

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #B3-28/29

Contact: +6565095002

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–9.30 PM

Price: $

Website

On days when I simply crave sushi, Sushi Plus is my go-to. It serves them fresh, high-quality, and with more choices than the usual sushi express I’ve tried.

You can order from the menu or take from the conveyor belt, all at reasonable prices. The place is spacious with booths and seats around the belt so it’s great for a family sit-down.

When I want something more filling, I go for the udon mentaiko in creme. The noodles are chewy and the broth has a rich, eggy flavour, with mentaiko sauce and an onsen egg.

Pro-tip: There’s free-flowing tea and complimentary water to cleanse your palate.

Chrysanthemum Gelato at Vanda Botanical Desserts

Address: 313@somerset, Orchard Rd, #01-17 313

Contact: +65 6589 8712

Hours: Daily, noon–10 PM

Price: $$

Website

For a uniquely refreshing dessert, try Vanda Botanical Desserts’ gelatos. Every flavour I’ve tried here is vibrant, balanced, and perfectly satisfying without being too sweet or sour (or having an overpowering “flowery” taste).

The standout flavour for me is the chrysanthemum with goji. The rich infusion of chrysanthemum’s floral notes and sweet, citrusy goji bites made it unforgettable.

And if you like mochi, try the mochi skin. Generous portions and a perfect mochi-gelato ratio will definitely satisfy.

Pro-tip: Sampling is allowed!

Fish Tacos at Chimi’s

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #01-25B

Contact: +6569805194

Hours:

Sunday to Thursday, noon to 11 PM

Friday to Saturday, noon to midnight

Price: $$

Website

I stumbled upon Chimi’s while shopping one time and enjoyed its lunch set special: fish tacos and chips with guacamole. The fish tacos are incredibly flavourful without being cloying.

Though the price is higher (S$12 for two), the generous protein in each taco makes it worth it. The overall ambience is casual and lively, though I won’t recommend having a business lunch here as conversations tend to get loud.

Pro-tip: Happy hour deals are available even on weekends from 8.30 PM onwards.

Caramel Cookie Bingsu at O’ma Spoon

Address: 313 Orchard Rd, #04 – 32

O’ma Spoon offers bingsu, a Korean shaved ice dessert that’s perfect for hot days. The smooth, snow-like ice is a standout.

The green tea and brown sugar flavours are especially tasty and seem to be the bestsellers. For groups, try the caramel cookie bingsu. It’s ideal for sharing with two to three friends.

The place can get cramped sometimes, but ample seating means we can take our time savouring our cold dessert without feeling pressured.

Pro-tip: Ordering alone? Go for the “petite” portions—perfect for solo treats.
