A Brief History of the Singapore Cable Car

A Brief History of the Singapore Cable Car

The Singapore Cable Car is a gondola lift system that connects the mainland of Singapore to the resort island of Sentosa across the Keppel Harbor.

The idea for this way of traveling came up in 1968 as the government was planning for different tourism projects for Singapore. Eventually, the idea was approved, and construction began in 1972.

The cable car system was opened to the public in 1974, making it the second aerial ropeway system in the world at the time to span a harbor (behind the Port Vell Aerial Tramway in Barcelona).

Now, the system is considered a tourist attraction in Singapore because of the panoramic views it offers.

    Sentosa Line

    — From: itssarah_s

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—8:45 am to 10 pm (last boarding at 9:30 pm)

The Sentosa Line is a relatively new addition to the cable car system in Singapore. It was only opened to the public on July 14, 2015.

This line is meant to connect the western part of Sentosa to its northern part.

This system line has three stations: Merlion, Imbiah Lookout, and Siloso.

How to Get to the Sentosa Line Stations

How to Get to the Sentosa Line Stations

Since there are no MRT stations within Sentosa Island, you can choose to walk or ride a shuttle bus or beach tram.

The Imbiah Lookout is likely the first Sentosa Line station you’ll come across since it’s just five minutes away from Sentosa Station on foot. As for the Merlion Station, it’s just three minutes away from Imbiah if you ride the Sentosa Express monorail.

Keep in mind that the Sentosa Line doesn’t cover the entirety of the island. So, you’ll definitely have to ride the bus or beach trams if you want to explore as many places here as possible.
