What to Do
Do birdwatching

Among the highlights of my birdwatching experience at this park are the vibrant white-throated Kingfisher, with its striking blue wings and rust-coloured breast, and the elegant grey heron, often seen wading gracefully through the shallow waters in search of food.
So bring a pair of trusty binoculars when you visit. The park’s rich birdlife and tranquil setting make it ideal for both seasoned birdwatchers and curious visitors.
Observe other wildlife

Hands down, one of the most exciting sights at the park is the playful smooth-coated otters, which are often seen swimming or hunting for fish in the park’s ponds. These social creatures are a delight to watch as they interact with one another and navigate the waterways.
Additionally, you might spot the imposing Malayan water monitor lizard basking on the banks or slowly moving through the underbrush. They’re one of the largest reptile species in Singapore and are known for their impressive size and calm demeanour.

Hampstead Wetlands Park offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse plant life that thrives in this unique ecosystem. As you wander through the park, you’ll encounter a variety of wetland plants that play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance.
When I’m there, I always look out for the lotus flowers that often bloom in the ponds, their large, delicate petals creating a striking contrast against the green lily pads. The park is also home to papyrus plants, with their tall, slender stems and umbrella-like tops.
Enjoy a quiet picnic

The park offers several serene picnic spots where you can lay down a blanket and set out your food. Whether you choose a shaded area under the trees or a sunny spot near the water’s edge, the peaceful atmosphere makes it easy to unwind and savour the moment.
Be sure to pack out all your trash. Leave no trace behind to keep the area clean for other visitors and protect the wildlife. Moreover, avoid feeding any animals, as this can disrupt their natural behaviour and harm the ecosystem.
Read educational signage

As you explore Hampstead Wetlands Park, take the time to read the educational signage strategically placed along the trails. These informative signs provide valuable insights into the rich diversity of flora and fauna that call the wetlands home.
The signage is there to help you to identify wildlife as you stroll through the park. Additionally, they include fascinating facts about the wetland’s unique environment and how it supports a delicate balance of life and contributes to conservation efforts in Singapore.
Sketch or paint your surroundings

If you’re part of an art group or looking for a creative community, consider organising a plein air painting session or a sketching meet-up at the park. It’s a great way to share techniques, exchange ideas, and draw inspiration from the natural environment together.
The park’s serene setting is also perfect for hosting art workshops, where participants can learn and practice their skills in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. And if you’re not artistic, you can always watch the art unfold courtesy of other creative people’s hands.
