At Prime Fight Gym, Muay Thai classes kick off with a quick warm-up followed by technical shadow boxing and practice drills like knees and body kicks. Each week focuses on a different style.

Pad and bag work come next. You can go all out. Just make sure your technique’s on point and not just prance around like I did!

With a maximum of ten people per class, it’s tailored for all levels, from beginners to pros. The class ends with conditioning and personalised feedback, which is great for neophytes like me.

Pro-tip: Free trials at PFG Muay Thai are for first-timers only.

Chowraiooi Muay Thai

Led by Coach Ajarn Chat from Thailand’s National Team, Chowraiooi Muay Thai is a space that offers authentic Muay Thai training linked to his own Chowraiooi Gym in Thailand.

But don’t expect a fancy gym; it’s all about mastering basics with conditioning, jump roping, and combos here.

As a beginner, I found the pace well-controlled, with Coach Robert delivering welcoming yet firm classes. The gym offers various training packages, including group sessions and discounted student plans.

Pro-tip: Bring exercise clothes, a towel, water, and hand wraps. The latter are required for hygiene.

Hilltop Academy

Address: 576B Serangoon Rd, Level 3

Hours: Monday to Friday, 2–9.30 PM; Saturdays, 10.30 AM–5.30 PM

Training at Hilltop Academy feels quite old-school with a focus on technique, cardio, and muscle-specific exercises for strength and endurance. The sessions include warm-ups, bag work, pad work, and conditioning exercises.

I like that the trainers actively correct techniques during class and pad work. The session lasts an average of one hour each which is just right for newbie office types like yours truly.

Once you’re feeling confident, you can request sparring sessions from the trainers. They’re all pretty friendly and can guide you on your form.

Pro-tip: The gym entrance is nondescript, so it might be a bit hard to locate among the shops.

Evolve MMA

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6.30 AM–11 PM; Saturday to Saturday, 8 AM–8 PM

I found Evolve MMA to be initially intimidating. With World Champion instructors like Panomroonglek Kiatmookao and Demetrious Johnson, I thought I was in for some military-type training!

But it didn’t take too long for me to realise that the staff are incredibly friendly, especially with kids. The instructors are enthusiastic, professional, and adaptable, ensuring progress tailored to each class and individual.

It’s a small wonder my nephew looks forward to his classes.

Pro-tip: MRT/bus routes lead directly to Clarke Quay shopping mall, making Evolve easily accessible.

BXG Boxing & Fitness

Address: 356 Tanjong Katong Rd

BXG Boxing & Fitness has a tiered program that suits all levels, from beginners to advanced. For the younger crowd, BXG offers specialised classes blending Muay Thai with discipline and fitness.

Many of the gym’s instructors are seasoned Muay Thai competitors and provide personalised and authentic guidance.

I felt that it was beyond just a training centre, but a community hub where regular events and seminars unite those with a shared passion for the sport.

Pro-tip: If you want challenging kickboxing circuits combined with strength-training techniques to boost stamina and endurance, try the intermediate sessions.

From training professional fighters over a decade ago to offering daily classes today, Farong is a gym that focuses on authentic Muay Thai. It caters to all levels, sessions range from basic to advanced Muay Thai and boxing.

Its Thailand branch hosts training camps and private classes, led by experienced fighters-turned-trainers. On our shores, I’m happy to report that, beyond physical training, the gym fosters a supportive Farong culture.

Pro-tip: It’s an air-conditioned facility with shower facilities, so feel free to sweat it out on the mat.

Established in 2011, Onyx has become a notable presence in our local martial arts scene. I learned about it from several friends who’ve been members for some time now.

One friend describes his experience training at Onyx as “tough yet rewarding,” as it emphasises consistent, quality teaching tailored to individual needs and goals.

Offering Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts, and strength and conditioning classes, the gym caters to diverse fitness levels.

Pro-tip: It’s a no-nonsense gym with bags for punching/kicking, a boxing ring, and floor mats for grappling. No fancy fitness equipment here!

The Jungle MMA

The Jungle MMA is one of the few places with AC during training. I know that’s probably an odd thing to mention at the start of a review, but we Singaporeans need air conditioning as much as we need oxygen.

It offers Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA, and boxing classes, with flexible memberships ranging from single classes to 12-month packages.

It has a diverse atmosphere that helps members push their limits, with passionate coaches ensuring even beginners become skilled practitioners.

Pro-tip: The gym is a minute from Raffles Place MRT and the CBD, which is easily accessible for busy professionals

Active Red

Hours: Monday to Friday, noon–9 PM; Saturdays, 11 AM–2 PM

Active Red offers innovative non-combative kickboxing training. It’s a style of kickboxing that focuses on fitness, conditioning, and technique without the intent of engaging in actual combat or sparring (as a non-confrontational gal, I’m hooked!).

It was established in 2019 and spans 2,600 square feet, featuring ten heavy bags, five gym machines, and two cardio machines. I was impressed by its flooring which was designed to ensure comfort for kickboxing and other fitness activities.

As Singapore’s World Association of Kickboxing Organizations representative, Active Red has become a hub for internationally accredited kickboxing education.

Pro-tip: For more focused attention, try the personalised exercise programming.

Core Collective

Address: 27a Loewen Rd, #27A, 30B/C 27a

Contact: +6569743228

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6 AM–9 PM; Saturdays, 7 AM–4 PM; Sundays, 8 AM–1 PM

Price: $$

Website

Core Collective touts itself as being more than a gym but a collaborative community hub focused on holistic well-being.

It has experienced trainers, fitness instructors, and wellness professionals offering personalised fitness programs, nutrition consultations, and stress-reduction workshops.

Admittedly, it’s not your usual Muay Thai gym which has a community-like sparring-focused atmosphere. Instead, it concentrates on athletes’ training for better performance, strength and conditioning, and even injury rehab.

Core Collective also occasionally holds free boxing and martial arts camps, so watch out for those.

Pro-tip: Water dispensers are available for your convenience, so remember to BYOB.

Tiger Muay Thai Singapore

Address: 73/75 South Bridge Rd

Hours: Monday to Friday, 7.30 AM–9 PM; Saturdays, 8.30 AM–3 PM; Sunday, 11 AM–2 PM

I like Tiger Muay Thai for its professional and experienced coaches across various martial arts disciplines, ensuring effective and safe training. The gym offers a wide range of martial arts teachings for both athletic and personal development.

Facilities include a workout area with eight punching bags, a water cooler, lockers for rent, and a washroom with five showers. The camaraderie among members enhances the experience.

Pro-tip: You can rent some gear here, as well.

Nine Blades Muay Thai

Website

Nine Blades Muay Thai Gym opened in 2023, but Coach Angus is a seasoned pro in the ring. He’s all about solid basics and detailed training.

He offers intense, authentic Muay Thai classes in a cosy space. The classes last up to one and a half hours, mirroring Thailand’s training intensity so you know you’re not getting any watered-down version of the sport.

But don’t be intimidated. The vibe I got at this gym is friendly, and members really enjoy sparring together.

Pro-tip: Shower rooms are available but can get busy during the lunch rush.
