At Eng Kee Chicken Wings, I grabbed bee hoon (rice vermicelli), green beans, and, of course, its famous fried chicken wings with coffee. The wings were perfectly marinated and juicy, and the meat fell off the bone.

The food’s quality made the price worth it, but heads up—expect a wait during peak hours (noon until 2 PM) for those hot, fresh wings!

Pro-tip: The wings also go great with fish fillet and otah (fish paste).

Uncle Penyet is a must-visit fried chicken joint. The chicken here is always crispy outside and juicy inside. The portions are just right, making me feel comfortably full but not jelak.

I love that the meat stays tender even after frying, and it’s always served hot. The curry sauce on the rice is a favourite of mine. The best part is the uncle happily gives extra if you ask!

Pro-tip: The stall charges 30 cents for takeaways.

The soup at No. 25 Minced Meat Noodle is packed with flavour, and its signature set is loaded with ingredients. The bowl came brimming with fish maw, handmade fish dumplings, minced pork, pork slices, and all kinds of meatballs.

The noodles were chewy and well-cooked, though the vinegar was pretty subtle. It tasted more like a richer broth from a hotpot, which is quite hearty for rainy days.

Pro-tip: For extra indulgence, add an egg. It gives the soup a smooth texture that takes it to the next level.

At Lim Bo Fruits Rojak, I was delighted to find that the you tiao (dough fritters) were perfectly crispy, and the cut fruits had a nice crunch. The rojak paste was thick and full of flavour—definitely one of the best fruit rojak mixes I’ve had.

The stall also serves prawn fritters, which was a pleasant surprise since you don’t see it at many other stalls. It was well-prepared and not greasy at all—a savoury treat that hit the spot.

Pro-tip: An S$8 serving is generous enough for two people.

The rice dumplings at 75 Ah Balling Peanut Soup are a real treat, especially with five different flavours to choose from—matcha being a unique standout. The peanut soup itself is super comforting, and the stall also offers ginger or almond soup.

The soft peanuts in the soup melt in your mouth, adding a nice nutty flavour. I loved how the peanut-filled rice balls didn’t burst open when I dipped them back into the soup to enjoy together. Overall, every sip and bite is a burst of flavour.

Pro-tip: The ginger soup starts off strong but mellows after a few spoonfuls.

I keep returning to Rendang Nation for its chicken rendang set, and here’s why—no MSG! I can tell because other rendang meals leave me thirsty, but not this one.

The nasi sambal goreng (steamed rice with side dishes) is packed with authentic flavour, and the beef rendang is tender and delicious. At affordable rates, everything here is guaranteed burp-worthy.

Pro-tip: Don’t pass up the lontong (curry) gravy, which is rich and thick and with a real coconut taste.

For just under S$5, you can savour the smooth and flavorful porridge at Botak Cantonese Porridge. Not knowing what to expect, I went for the lean meat century egg porridge with an added egg.

The chef cooked the egg white first, and I let the yolk sit in the heat of the porridge without breaking it. The yolk turned firm on the outside, with the centre still runny—perfectly indulgent for such humble surroundings.

Pro-tip: The crispy you tiao is a great crunchy pairing with the creamy porridge.

For those unfamiliar, lei cha is a traditional Hakka dish with rice, finely chopped vegetables, herbs, nuts, and sometimes tofu, all served with a unique green tea soup.

The version at Hakka Leipop is a standout, featuring freshly cooked ingredients and a flavourful lei cha paste. It’s easily one of the best I’ve tried, served with white or brown rice and five different veggies, along with peanuts, dried shrimp, and cai pok (pickled radish).

Pro-tip: The lei cha here has a milder herbal flavour, making it a good option for those who prefer a less intense taste.

Noodle stalls are everywhere in Singapore, but Guo Qin Noodle’s pork rib version has always beckoned to me. The springy noodles and lean char siew are perfect when you need a pick-me-up.

I also tried the dumpling noodles. The horfun (flat rice noodles) was silky, catching the light yet flavorful sauce beautifully. The dumplings were a delight, with sweet pork, thin skin, and a bit of crunch from the water chestnut. The whole meal felt balanced and satisfying.

Pro-tip: You can ask for less oil if you’re watching your cholesterol.

Tofu is a must in any yong tau foo dish, and Zi Jia nails it every time. It’s always soft, fluffy, and fresh—never stale or sour like some other places. There’s also an udon version if you want to try something different.

I often spot the staff prepping ingredients by hand, which likely explains the freshness. And I have to mention the stall’s homemade fish paste. It’s a real winner in all the menu items!

Pro-tip: For extra crunchiness, you can request the cook to deep fry your dry ingredients a second time.

For just around S$4, Hi Leskmi Whampoa Nasi Lemak hits all the right notes. The sambal is ultra smoky, the chicken wings are perfectly marinated and crispy, and the rice is deliciously fragrant.

I love the runny egg, tender cabbage, and fresh cucumber. All of them pair so well with the chilli. The crunchy ikan bilis (small dried anchovies) is the cherry on top!

Pro-tip: Paying with the Timbre app gives you an extra discount.

A group of us ordered the grouper with clams, prawns, and squid at Souperb (although it’s not strictly a seafood restaurant)! The seafood was fresh and delicious, I especially loved the sweet and sour soup that’s packed with garlic flavour.

We had to wait a bit since everything was made to order, but the steamed fish with its soy sauce base was worth it. There was hardly anything left but bones when we were done.

Pro-tip: Be sure to try the signature squid in its zesty Thai lime chilli style when you’re here.
