Salad Days: Where To Find The Best Rojak In Singapore

Rojak is special in Singapore due to its piquant taste and cultural significance, reflecting the country’s multicultural heritage (Malay, Chinese, and Indian).

The term rojak itself means “mixture” in Malay, and it’s essentially a mixed salad with a sweet and spicy peanut sauce dressing.

Curious about this dish? With this guide, let’s discover the best rojak in Singapore and where to find them.

Brothers Rojak, a small stall in Clementi run by two brothers, is notorious for its long queues. The dish emphasises quality ingredients, featuring pungent hei gor (shrimp paste) for a strong umami flavour.

Alongside traditional fruits and vegetables, the stall offers freshly toasted tau kwa (tofu puffs) with optional add-ons like dried cuttlefish, codfish, and century egg. It’s paired with dark, sticky sauce for a perfect balance of salty and sweet.

Pro-tip: Finish your rojak with a squeeze of zesty calamansi (Southeast Asian citrus) and finely crushed peanuts.

At Soo Heng Rojak, there’s only one item on the menu. This makes ordering simple: choose your portion size, add extra toppings, and specify your spice level!

The Chinese rojak comes with sauce served separately, portioned for approximately three people. The sauce, made from fermented prawn paste, sugar, and ginger flower, is mixed in a wooden bowl.

The process results in an intense, sweet flavour with pronounced fermented shrimp notes and no saltiness.

Pro-tip: Expect up to a 30-minute wait due to the usual lines.

Lim Bo Rojak

Lim Bo Rojak offers authentic Penang-style rojak where you tiao (fried dough fritters), prawn crackers, and fish skin are freshly fried before assembly. Their crispy you tiao shatters upon biting, devoid of any doughy texture and offering a satisfying crunch.

Unlike the thick, sticky sauce commonly found in others, Lim Bo Rojak’s sauce is slightly runnier with rich, sweet flavours. We also noted a less pronounced prawn paste taste.

Pro-tip: Adding chilli provides a pleasant kick to the sweet sauce.

The sauce strikes a balanced sweetness and spice, letting the fragrance of fermented prawn paste shine without overwhelming other flavours.

Singapore Famous Rojak is a popular stall known for its rojak, featuring cucumber, pineapple, pear, you tiao, and tau pok mixed with bean sprouts and topped with grated peanuts.

While the fruit slices are juicy, the you tiao and tau pok are soft rather than crispy. The sweet rojak sauce is watery and refreshing with a noticeable sugar flavour.

Pro-tip: As the sauce is runnier than most, it’s best to eat your rojak right away before it gets soggy.

The freshness of the ingredients, including crunchy cucumber and turnip, paired with the nutty sauce, creates a satisfying dish. Additionally, the sweet pineapple wedges highlight the freshness of the fruit.

At Bendemeer Market, Eat May Know offers a humble you tiao stall that also sells rojak. The rojak comes with all the usual trimmings, but what sets it apart is the quality of the you tiao—deep golden brown, crispy shell, and fluffy middle.

It’s freshly toasted too, which is probably why the scent of the you tiao often draws queues, especially around lunchtime.

Pro-tip: Have some strong black coffee or soy milk with your rojak for a completely satisfying snack.
