What to Do in Yunnan Park

Admire a waterfall

Waterfalls in Singapore are pretty rare, so when you stumble upon one, it’s like finding a hidden gem.

Picture this: a magnificent 5.6-metre-tall man-made waterfall cascading down into Nanyang Lake. The sound of rushing water is just mesmerising.

The waterfall isn’t just for show either. It brings the lake right into the garden, complete with vibrant koi fish swimming around. Beyond its beauty, the waterfall flows into artificial wetlands below, purifying rainwater and nurturing diverse plant and animal life.

Traverse boardwalk trails

The boardwalk trails here are a real hit among visitors. Yunnan Park boasts 19 of them, each with its own charm—from the Orchid Trail to the Art and Literature Trail.

They’re pretty accessible, with some parts even leading down to ground level for easy exploring.

And hey, don’t forget to scan those QR codes along the way. They’re packed with interesting info to enhance your stroll through this tranquil oasis.

Immerse yourself in traditional Chinese heritage

Being in Yunnan Park is like stepping into a traditional Chinese paradise right here in SG. The design is so thoughtfully done, with details like the Jurong West Nantah arch, those cool geometric pathways, and those eye-catching red pavilions.

Don’t miss the replica Jurong West Nantah arch. It’s perfect for snapping some Instagram-worthy pics.

Plus, you’ll spot other iconic monuments like the red-roofed pavilions and the Nanyang University Memorial, giving you a glimpse into the university’s rich history.

Bike around and beyond the park

Biking around Yunnan Garden within the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) campus is a safe and relaxing activity, especially at night. The area features pathways that are suitable for cycling, allowing you to take in the scenic views while riding.

If you want a seamless cycling experience while immersing yourself in nature, try the Jurong Park Connector which links to the larger Western Adventure Loop, connecting Yunnan Garden to parks such as Jurong Central Park and Jurong East Park.

For security, always check the latest maps and regulations regarding cycling paths and park connectors for a safe journey.

Spot a rare otter (or two!)

A pair of otters have decided to NTU its new home! They’re often seen around the CresPion precinct and right in Yunnan Garden, and they are a real treat to watch. These little guys are just too cute with their playful antics.

So keep your eyes peeled for them, and when you do spot them, remember the following:

Please don’t touch them, chase them, or corner them.

Keep the waters clean! Don’t litter or leave sharp objects around. Otters need clean, safe waterways teeming with fish to thrive.

Commune with lush greenery and exotic plants

When it reopened in 2020, Yunnan Park added some new features while still keeping those iconic Senegal mahogany trees from the 1960s intact. They’ve even added cosmetic and medicinal plants, along with fruits and veggies like potatoes and celery.

The trails are named perfectly for what you’ll find along the way. Take the Herbal Trail, for instance. You can discover all sorts of herbs there.

Plus, they’ve planted over 1,000 new trees, with around 80 different species, which has boosted the garden’s biodiversity.

Take your dog for a stroll

Yunnan Park isn’t just for us humans. It’s a doggie paradise too! With its wide pathways and lush greenery, there’s plenty of room for my pup to stretch his legs and sniff around to his heart’s content.

I just make sure to keep my dog properly leashed and pick up after him to preserve the park’s beauty and cleanliness.

Workout at the fitness corner and playground

Yunnan Garden is all about inclusivity. There’s something here for everyone. If you’re into staying fit, you’ll love the two outdoor workout stations.

Right in between, there’s a super fun playground for the kiddos, complete with climbing nets and slides. Plus, there are water coolers nearby for a quick refresh.

It’s the perfect setup. Kids can have a blast on the playground while adults get their exercise on.

Pack a picnic

There’s nothing like enjoying your favourite snacks amidst the lush greenery and tranquil vibes of the park. A lot of NTU students do this with food bought from canteens and food stalls inside their school building.

As for me (a mere visitor), eating outdoors in such a serene environment is a real treat. I always bring some refreshing drinks and a good book to make the most of my relaxing day out.

Get creative

When I’m surrounded by unique flora, fauna, and architecture in places like Yunnan Park, I tend to nurture my artistic side. This means I bring my sketchpad, watercolours, or pens and pencils to capture the delicate beauty around me.

You can do the same when you’re in the gardens of Yunnan Park using your preferred medium. I often find myself in the company of other creatives like photographers, painters, cosplayers, and even poets on calm, sunny days!
