The Ultimate Guide to Exploring the Shopping Haven That Is Bugis Street

When I step into Bugis Street, I’m immediately swept up by the energy buzzing in its every corner. It’s one of those places where you can’t help but feel the pulse of the city, with its mix of vibrant stalls, delicious street food aromas, and crowds of both locals and tourists on the hunt for deals.

If it’s your first time here, it can be a bit of a maze—but that’s part of the charm! Let me guide you through it so you can make the most of your visit and discover the hidden gems this iconic spot has to offer.

Background Info and Brief History

A bit of controversial trivia: back in the 1950s and 60s, Bugis Street was infamous for its vibrant nightlife and was known as a hub for transvestites and transsexuals, attracting tourists and sailors from around the world.

Today, Bugis Street has transformed into one of the largest and most popular shopping spots in Singapore.

It’s a hotspot for affordable fashion, accessories, souvenirs, and street food. With over 600 shops, you can find everything from trendy clothes to quirky knick-knacks, all at wallet-friendly prices.

How to Get to Bugis Street

As this post discusses, it’s easy to get around Singapore like a pro.

Closest MRT: Take the MRT to Bugis Station (EW12/DT14), which is on the East-West Line (Green Line) and Downtown Line (Blue Line). Once you exit the station, follow the signs towards Bugis Junction, and you’ll find Bugis Street just across the road from the mall.

The entrance to Bugis Street is easy to spot with its iconic sign, and it’s only a short 2–3 minute walk from the station exit.

Closest bus station: Alight at the Bugis Junction bus stop (Bus Stop Code: 01112) along Victoria Street. Several bus routes serve this stop, including 7, 12, 32, 51, 63, 80, 145, and 197.

Once you get off, simply cross the road to Bugis Junction and walk towards the entrance of Bugis Street.

By car: The most convenient parking option is the Bugis Junction Mall car park, located directly across from Bugis Street. Additionally, you can find parking at the Fu Lu Shou Complex or Rochor Centre, both within a short walking distance.

Parking rates vary depending on the day, with higher charges typically during peak hours (noon to 2 PM and 6 to 8 PM).

Experience the bustling night scene

I love visiting Bugis Street in the evening when the place truly comes alive. As the sun sets, the shops and food stalls stay open late, and the atmosphere gets even more electric.

The streets fill up with people, all buzzing with excitement, making it the perfect spot for some late-night shopping and indulging in tasty snacks. There’s something special about the energy here at night that just draws you in.

As I wander through Bugis Street, I am pleasantly surprised to stumble upon some incredible street art tucked away between the shops. One of my favourites is a vibrant mural near the entrance, bursting with colours that capture the lively spirit of the area.

It’s like discovering hidden gems as you shop, adding a splash of creativity to the experience. So keep your eyes peeled; you never know what masterpiece you’ll find around the next corner.

I recently treated myself to a manicure at Nail of the Day in Bugis, and it was such a great experience. The salon has a cosy, welcoming vibe, and the staff were super friendly from the moment I walked in.

I opted for a gel manicure, and they had a wide range of colours and designs to choose from. The nail technician was meticulous, making sure every detail was perfect, and I could tell she really cared about her work.

Indulge in iconic street food

One of the best parts about exploring Bugis Street is definitely the food. I never miss grabbing a cup of the famous Thai milk tea from one of the stalls. It’s the perfect drink to keep you cool while you shop!

And then there’s the crispy pancakes; they’re a must-try, with that perfect balance of crunchy and sweet. Trust me, you’ll want to come hungry and dive into all the delicious flavours Bugis Street has to offer.

I couldn’t resist trying my luck at the Pick a Prize claw machine on the second floor of Bugis Street. The machines are filled with all sorts of tempting prizes—plush toys, gadgets, and quirky collectables.

The machines are well-maintained, and you can tell they take care to rotate the prizes frequently. It’s easy to get caught up in the fun, so if you’re in Bugis Street, definitely give it a shot.

Just be prepared. You might end up spending more time (and coins) than you planned!

Whenever I’m on Bugis Street, I’m amazed by just how many shops there are—over 600! It’s one of the biggest and most exciting places to shop in Singapore—small wonder many call it the country’s biggest flea market

I love stopping by small stalls selling quirky accessories and trendy clothes that won’t hurt your wallet. You can find just about anything here, from unique fashion pieces to fun souvenirs.

I’m not usually big on denim shopping, but the Bugis Denim selection caught my eye. I ended up getting a couple of pairs of jeans and some denim shorts, and I have to say the fit was spot on—comfy, stretchy, and perfect for my body type.

The staff really knew their stuff and made sure I left with pieces that not only looked good but felt great. Plus, they even customised the fit by adding buttons and hemming the jeans right there!

Chick-It at Stall 15 is my go-to for crispy fried chicken chop and bento sets. Honestly, its chicken cutlet beats the pricier ones hands down.

The sweet potato fries and popcorn chicken are top-notch, too. And if you love mushrooms, don’t miss the Shiitake mushrooms—they’re amazing!

Crispy Pancake

I tried the glutinous rice (muah chee) at Crispy Pancake for just S$2. It’s not as sweet or fragrant as I’m used to, but the rice cake is nice and chewy and has a pleasant aftertaste.

And for under S$3, the kaya balls can be shared between two people with its dense dough. I found it a satisfying snack and a nice break from the usual sugary treats.

Ned’s Crepes is my go-to for homemade crepes. My favourite is Number 4, the strawberry blush, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream

There’s also a version with fresh strawberry slices and Nutella if your sweet tooth prefers that combo. Just a tip: head there after 2 PM to avoid the long queues.

Shoon Kou Cafe

For a filling meal, check out Shoon Kou Cafe—an authentic Vietnamese spot run by locals. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the air-conditioned comfort. The S$2 Vietnamese coffee is a steal!

The prawn-paste chicken is a bit pricey but totally worth it for the juicy, flavourful chicken. Just a tip: sit away from the kitchen to avoid the strong wok hei and chilli fumes that can make you cough and tear up a bit.
