The Best Japanese Stores in Singapore for All My Grocery, Fashion, and Furniture Needs!

I just know that my bank account hates to see me coming every payday because the moment my salary comes, the first thing I do is shopping. And my latest obsession is shopping at various Japanese stores.

I love Japanese fashion stores because the new dresses and accessories are always chic and trendy. But sometimes, I find myself in Japanese furniture shops (because I’m obsessed with the elegance of Japanese furniture) and Japanese grocery stores (the snacks are immaculate!).

If you want to see what I’m talking about, these are the ones I highly recommend you check out!

Meidi-Ya is a popular grocery store in Japan, and it’s one I visited when I vacationed there years ago. So, when I learned there’s now an outlet in Singapore, I was thrilled!

My favourite thing to stock up on from this Japanese supermarket is the various pastries. In particular, I’m obsessed with the sandwiches with cream filling and fruits and the different flavours of mochi.

Pro Tip:

  • If you’re always shopping here, you might want to get a Meidi-Ya Privilege Card because it lets you earn points. Once you’ve accumulated enough points, you can redeem them for rewards.

If you’re a big fan of making your own sushi, sashimi, and other seafood-based dishes, then you’ll love Fish Mart Sakuraya. This store sells all sorts of fresh seafood that are imported all the way from Japan!

I mostly get salmon or tuna here because they’re my favourite fish to use in making sushi. If I can afford to splurge, I go all out on the Alaskan king crab. I love making my own seafood boil at home, and this crab is truly king (heh) for this dish. Subtly sweet and absorbs all the buttery, spicy goodness from the sauce!

Pro Tips:

  • If you order from the online store, you can enjoy free shipping once your order exceeds S$80.
  • Planning to host a sushi party? This store sells bento boxes and ready-made sushi and sashimi for large group gatherings!

Like a lot of people, I’m obsessed with Pocky, and this store sells many flavours of it—including limited flavours that are only available in Japan!

J-Mart is another great mart that you can check out to stock up on Japanese snacks that are hard to find elsewhere. This store is actually best known for its array of Japanese sake, many of which are hand-brewed and high-quality at affordable prices.

My favourite sake is the Gokyo Five Junmaiginjo Namagenshu Kimoto. This drink is aged, so the flavours are incredibly rich. When you take a sip, you’ll get a taste of deep sweetness, a combination of orange, peach, and melon. The aftertaste is pretty light, tempting me to drink even more.

Pro Tip:

  • Become a J-Mart member to earn fun perks like 3% off every purchase. Plus, if you order from the online store and your total is above S$180, you can get another 3% off.

I love making my own hotpot sometimes, especially if I’m inviting friends and family over, and thankfully, Zairyo provides me with what I need. I usually get a variety of frozen meats for the toppings. My top choices are salmon slices, Iberico pork jowl, asari clams, and a portion of king crab.

Also known as Don Quijote, Don Don Donki is another popular retail store in Japan that made its way to Singapore. Just like the outlets in Japan, this store features all sorts of goodies, including groceries, clothes, and electronics—all sold at discounted prices!

I love coming here just to hunt for Japanese snacks I’ve never heard of. There are pastries with unique flavour combinations (e.g., peach and matcha), as well as drinks that I can’t find anywhere else. I make sure to try as many of the fruit-flavoured beverages as possible.

I’m obsessed with the teaware sold here. I actually got my favourite teaware set here: the porcelain teapot and cups with the killifish design. I love how simple the pot and cups are and how the killifish dotting all over attracts the eye!

I recognised wood and maple, but there are also other types I wasn’t familiar with, such as Japanese fir, purpleheart, and Burmese teak!

I got some of my office furnishings here, especially the bookshelf and desk. They’re made of alder wood, and to this day, they still look like they’re brand new!

Retro Colony

– From: retro_colony

Address: 19 Niven Rd

Operating Hours: Tuesday to Saturday—12 pm to 5 pm

Contact Number: +6565741741

Website

Another Japanese furniture store that I love is Retro Colony. This one, in particular, will appear to the hipsters because the products here have old-school, vintage aesthetics.

But even if you’re not into the vintage look, you might still want to purchase something here because their products are known to be versatile and long-lasting. I have a friend who bought his chairs from this shop, and even after a decade later, they’re still sturdy. Mind you, these chairs have been dragged all over the place!

Pro Tip:

  • You can make a custom order at this store. I recommend booking a session (via phone) so that you can have an in-depth discussion with the designer.
