Attractions to See

No. 39 and 45 Emerald Hill

No. 39 Emerald Hill caught my eye with its elegant facade and intricate floral motifs, a true showcase of Peranakan craftsmanship. Stepping closer, I could almost imagine the lives of the wealthy families who once called this stunning shophouse home.

Just a few steps away, No. 45 stands out with its bold colours and baroque-style details, strikingly contrasting its neighbours. These iconic shophouses tell stories of Emerald Hill’s heritage, blending Chinese, Malay, and European influences into architectural masterpieces.

Note that these aren’t open to the public, so you can’t go inside without permission.

The Former Singapore Chinese Girls’ School Site

I was intrigued to find that 37 Emerald Hill was once home to the original Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, a pioneer in educating Peranakan girls in the early 20th century. Established in 1899, this historic institution broke barriers, offering formal education to girls at a time when it wasn’t the norm.

Though the school has since relocated, its former site remains a significant landmark in Emerald Hill. Standing there, I couldn’t help but imagine the students who once walked these grounds, shaping the future of women’s education in Singapore.

Peranakan Place

Peranakan Place feels like a perfect bridge between old and new, seamlessly blending heritage architecture with modern comforts. Its restored shophouses retain the charm of Peranakan design, from colourful tiles to intricate wooden details, while housing trendy shops and eateries.

I stopped for a quick bite at one of the cafes and couldn’t help but marvel at how effortlessly history meets modernity here.
