A Guide to Changi Golf Club, A Historic 9-Hole Challenge

For me and many other golfers, Changi Golf Club in Singapore isn’t just another 9-hole course. It’s a walkthrough in history where wartime bunkers still line the fairways. Every swing comes with sea breezes and RAF echoes.

Tucked in Singapore’s east, this compact course packs tricky greens and rolling fairways into a nostalgic setting. If you’re a social golfer, expat, or just chasing a unique round, this guide will help you enjoy the club to the fullest!

History and Overview of Changi Golf Club

Changi Golf Club was built in 1946 by the Royal Air Force, and served as the RAF’s Changi course until the RAF left in 1971. It remains one of Singapore’s most historic 9-hole layouts.

The course is par-68 with narrow, undulating fairways and a slope rating of 122. Twin tees and twin greens allow players to stretch the 9 holes into a full 18-hole round.

Its signature is the famously tight 18th fairway, which was once in the Guinness Book of World Records as the narrowest in golf. The fairways feature Axonopus cow-grass, while the greens use Paspalum and Bermuda, with a course rating of 66–70.

What to See and Do

Play the historic 9-hole RAF course

– Media from geekbrains

Walking into the 9-hole RAF course at Changi feels like stepping into history with every swing. The fairways are tight, and the sea breeze is sometimes unforgiving.

It’s a par-68 that tricks me with narrow lies and undulating greens, making every hole a test. By the time I reach the Guinness-famous 8th fairway, I’ve respected its bite.

Pro-tip: Pack more accuracy than power. Changi Golf Club’s narrow fairways punish big hitters, so a steady mid-iron game will save you from the bunkers and trees.

Unwind at the Golfer’s Terrace

– Media from tayelsie888

Location: Attached to the clubhouse

Hours: Daily, 7 AM to 10 PM

After a tough round, the sea breeze at Golfer’s Terrace feels like a real reward. I end up lingering with a combination of cold beer, fried bites, and a million-dollar view.

I consider it my 19th hole. With a wide horizon and a glimpse of Pulau Ubin, it makes every game memorable (no matter how badly played).

Pro-tip: Time your visit for the late afternoon, as the sunset at the Terrace is often glorious.

Sing your heart out in the karaoke room

– Media from chefaong_worathongchai

Location: The Cove, leisure wing of the clubhouse

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 3 to 9.30 PM (last song, 9 PM)

I will spill the best-kept secret on the greens: The Cove karaoke room. If you feel like vocalising your frustrations, step in, grab the mic, and simply swap your swing for a song.

The playlist is as eclectic as the crowd. One minute, it’s power ballads, and the next, it’s 80s rock. It just goes to show that rhythm at this golf club isn’t just for putting!

Pro-tip: For bigger chances of hogging the mic, go early in the evening, as there are fewer queues.

Enjoy card games

– Media from claressamonteiro

Location: The Card Room, members-only leisure wing of the clubhouse

The Card Room is where the competition shifts from clubs to cards. The quiet hum of the air conditioner and the clinking of the chips are punctuated by bragging rights dealt face-to-face.

The space is set up for mahjong and traditional card games like poker or bridge, mainly for members’ leisure. It’s quieter than the lounge but no less intense.

Pro-tip: Even if you don’t play, the room is ideal for cooling off and watching the games.

Host events at the function room or outdoor venues

– Media from kikisaidah

Locations: The Creek Function Room, Light House, lounge, card room, karaoke room (clubhouse leisure wing); Sunset Terrace and other outdoor spaces

Hours: Schedule facilities and venues rental here

I’ve witnessed how Light House and The Creek Function Room handle wedding receptions, birthdays, meetings, and golf socials without a fuss. They are air-conditioned, can seat over a hundred attendees, and can be made elegant in a snap.

Outside, the seaside terrace swaps walls for a gorgeous horizon. I’ve seen many beautiful nuptials take place there, with the sunset taking centre stage.

Pro-tip: Book well ahead and aim for the golden hour. Both the glass-walled Light House and seaside terrace transform into stunning backdrops when the sun dips over Changi’s coast.

Restock your golf gear at the Pro Shop

– Media from calvinchoo_

Location: Leisure wing, clubhouse

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM

Sometimes, when I forget my golf gloves or need to replace stray balls, I head over to the Pro Shop in the clubhouse. Shelves line up with tees, polo shirts, and even that spare putter I didn’t think I’d need when I left my house.

It’s not a flashy store, but it has saved my round several times when my gear gave out.

Pro-tip: It also offers a club repair service, so your snapped shaft doesn’t have to end an exciting game.

Where to Eat and Drink

Chinese Restaurant (Clubhouse)

– Media from _melllllly

Location: Clubhouse leisure wing facing Changi Beach

The Chinese Restaurant at the clubhouse pairs sea views with hearty classics. Round tables fill with steaming claypot tofu, sweet and sour pork, and chilli crab. It’s the ideal spot for post-game family dinners or banquets after an event.

Pro-tip: Try the salted egg prawns and crispy roast chicken, which are fan favourites at this place.

The Nineteenth Golfer’s Lounge

– Media from donut_nuttawe

Location: Adjacent to the Golfer’s Terrace

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 10 PM

The set menus change with the season at The Nineteenth Golfer’s Lounge, the club’s laid-back corner. It’s best enjoyed after nine holes with its casual and quiet vibe. The claypot seafood and rotating specials are worth grabbing before they vanish.

Pro-tip: Pair your meal with an ice-cold beer to get the easiest win of the day.

Turnhouse Bistro & Bar

– Media from yanyingxx

Location: Clubhouse, north-facing coastal side

Hours:

Lunch, daily, 11 AM to 3 PM

Dinner, Monday to Friday, 5.30 to 10 PM

Saturday to Sunday, 5.30 to 11 PM

Turnhouse Bistro & Bar mixes golf club calm with seaside dining. The menu swings between Western comfort (think pizzas and steaks) and Asian staples. I like getting the fish and chips after a round, while the grilled ribeye is for celebrating wins.

Pro-tip: On weekends, grab a seat for live music with your pint.

Heaven’s Lotus

– Media from heavenlotussg

Heaven’s Lotus has scenic sea views that make its Thai curries taste even richer. When I’m craving spice over steak, I always go to this spot. Its tom yum also kicks hard, while the green curry chicken balances heat with coconut creaminess.

Pro-tip: Don’t skip the mango sticky rice for a sweet finish that lingers!

Golfer’s Terrace

– Media from lemonangle

The fried chicken wings at Golfer’s Terrace have become a go-to snack among my friends at Changi Golf Club. They go well with our post-round pint, and the ambience is relaxed, scenic, and where time slows down with every sip.

Pro-tip: Feeling extra famished? Have some mee goreng and a cold Tiger beer.
