Best Dermatologists in Singapore

The 8 Best Dermatologists In Singapore To Solve Any Skin Concern

Are you currently struggling with a skin-related problem? Instead of waiting for it to get worse, why not consult with the best dermatologists in Singapore for the right course of action to solve it?

If you want to do that, today’s list can help. Here, we’ve compiled some of the best-reviewed and most recommended skin centres and dermatologists on the island.

Before we go any further, we’ll also go over the expected cost of seeing a dermatologist in Singapore. We’ve also answered some questions about dermatologists and their services.

The Cost of Dermatological Services in Singapore

It’s no surprise that the cost of dermatological services in Singapore is quite high. Most of them are considered cosmetic procedures, so oftentimes they aren’t covered by health insurance or medical subsidies.

When choosing a dermatologist in Singapore, you can either go for a public or private specialist. Obviously, the rates between a public and private dermatologist are different.

A first-time consultation with a dermatologist at a public hospital or health centre would cost around $35 to $60, including the subsidy. Then, follow-up consultations would normally be $3 to $5 cheaper.

Luckily, a few dermatologist-described medications are subsidised by the Ministry of Health. You can get those for about a fraction of the price then, compared to getting them from a private clinic or pharmacy.

On average, the total cost of consultation and medication with a public skin specialist would range from roughly $100 to $250. That’s about 40 to 60% cheaper compared to private dermatology clinics.

Meanwhile, only consulting with a dermatologist at a private clinic would cost about $120 to $160. Consultations after are about $10 to $20 cheaper.

It’s worth noting that private clinics don’t offer subsidies for medications, so this is where you need to prepare your wallet. The cost of medication, including consultations, at a private skin centre will be about $350 or more in total.

Aside from the cost, there are pros and cons to consulting with either a public or private skin specialist.

You might have to wait up to seven weeks for an appointment at a public clinic because walk-in patients aren’t allowed. However, there’s a way to bypass the almost two-month waiting time.

You could book an initial appointment with a private dermatologist and then ask for a referral for a public dermatologist for the succeeding consultations. It would only hurt your pockets in the beginning, but afterwards, the costs would be more budget-friendly.

On the other hand, booking an appointment with a private dermatologist tends to be faster. Most skin clinics can offer an appointment one to two days after calling. In fact, some skin clinics even accept walk-in patients, as long as the doctor’s schedule permits.

You can only be eligible for subsidies on your skin treatment, medication, or surgery depending on the dermatologist’s assessment of your skin condition.

However, if the procedure needed is considered cosmetic by the Ministry of Health, there won’t be any subsidies.

Our advice would be to look for a skin clinic that specialises in your desired skin procedure. A few examples of possible procedures are chemical peel, melasma, mole removal, birthmark removal, fractional lasers, and dermal fillers.

Anyway, here’s a table of the estimated costs of the most common skin procedures in Singapore.

We were only able to find the rates of private skin clinics, so most of these services will look expensive:

Getting a Subsidy for Public Dermatologists in Singapore

If you’re not willing to spend close to a thousand bucks for a single skin procedure, then your only option is to go with a dermatologist at a public skin clinic.

You might end up waiting for almost two months to get an appointment, but at least you’re not going to end up broke trying to pay for your skin procedures.

Since some skin treatments are subsidised at public clinics, you might want to make sure that you’re qualified for one.

To qualify for medical subsidies in Singapore, you need to:

  • Be a Singaporean national or a permanent resident, and
  • Get a referral letter from a polyclinic.

You won’t qualify for the subsidy if you’re a foreigner, referred by a private doctor or clinic, and referred to consult with a specific skin specialist.

Some polyclinics on the island are equipped to treat a variety of common skin and hair conditions such as allergies, eczema, and acne. More severe skin conditions that can’t be treated by polyclinics are usually referred to an NSC dermatologist.

Customer Reviews

Since Dr. Joyce is one of the most in-demand dermatologists in Singapore, it’s no surprise that her clinic has received mostly positive feedback from patients. Here are some of them:

“Dr. Joyce Lim is a very remarkable skin doctor, very smart and graceful. She may have less talk especially for the initial visit. But the more you know her, you notice that she is actually a kind loving person. I have been her patient since 2015. I always trust her and always find that the result is what I’m looking for. And for the last two years my daughter has visited her for her acne problem and now she has a very clear skin. I regret the bad review just simply because She doesn’t emphasize too much on customer service. She is a great doctor with a great result. For me a great result is more important than a sweet talk.”

“Dr Lim is a very professional and a skillful dermatologist in her field. My wife and I have been visiting her for years. She doesn’t recommend treatments that you do not require and will advise you accordingly. Her medication and treatment has helped to resolve my skin issues tremendously. Highly recommended.”

If you’re looking for cheaper dermatology services, then we highly recommend booking an appointment with the National Skin Centre. It’s a public medical facility, so some medical services are covered by government subsidies.

Inside the National Skin Centre are multiple sub-specialty clinics that focus on different types of skin conditions and disorders. Some of the conditions treated by these sub-clinics are acne, eczema, skin cancer, psoriasis, hair loss, skin pigmentation, cutaneous infections, and wound and ulcer.

National Skin Centre offers limited cosmetic services because it focuses on medical dermatology, so it’s not the right clinic for people looking for budget-friendly aesthetic procedures.

There’s also a non-subsidised clinic for locals, permanent residents, and even international patients. Rates for the non-subsidised clinic are still a lot cheaper compared to other private clinics, but there will be no discounts provided.

You can qualify for subsidised care at the NSC if you’re Singaporean or a Permanent Resident with a referral letter from a polyclinic or from SAF medical centres.

Finally, since the National Skin Centre is a public clinic, it doesn’t have operations on weekends.

Pros

  • Subsidised services
  • Cheaper rates and medications
  • Personalised skin treatments

Cons

  • Getting an appointment might take two months
  • No weekend consultations

Customer Reviews

Here are some experiences of people who chose to had their skin treatments at the National Skin Centre”

“Absolutely the best (for me personally) Skin Center I ever been to. 3 times I had been treated and given consultation (since 2001), and all the time they were very detailed and thorough. Their medication may not work for some but for me it’s a miracle. It is very easy to make an appointment even if you’re not a citizen like me. For the amount of money I spent on this facility and the result I got, I can easily recommend this place to anyone with acute Eczema/Dermatitis Atopic.”

“Contrary to the other reviews, my experience was a good one. I arrived punctually at 2pm for my appointment and was immediately seen by the doctor. The doctor was polite and professional. He was also very knowledgeable and would write down points of discussion. In terms of wait time, I waited longest at the pharmacy, for about 20 minutes. My whole visit took around 1.5 hours.”
