It’s hard to believe that 1939 Singapore is calling it a day. As someone who’s seen Potato Head through its golden years and welcomed the rebrand into 1939 just a few months back, the news of its closure hits unexpectedly hard.

Tucked into the iconic building at Keong Saik Road, 1939 Singapore was more than just a facelift. It kept the soul of Potato Head alive, with the vibrant hand-painted murals, quirky vintage touches, and a checkered staircase providing a homey atmosphere.

What changed when it reopened was the concept of having four distinct floors, each with its own vibe. The Front Porch on the ground floor still served the legendary Three Buns burgers, while one level up, The Restaurant added a refined touch to date nights.

Some unforgettable menu items I ordered at Three Buns include the simple but satisfying Baby Huey, a classic cheeseburger with classic condiments, and the Truff Ryder Fries tossed in truffle oil, parmesan, and garlic dust.

As for The Restaurant, I will certainly miss the beef rendang sliders with pickled onions on the side, and the delightfully unique sticky date pudding with coconut cream for dessert!

Meanwhile, Studio 1939 on the third floor was our cocktail haven (try the 1939 Negroni or the Kampong Margarita!), and when we’re not too tipsy to climb one more flight of stairs, the breezy and calming The Rooftop was our ideal spot for winding down.

It never felt like a rushed project. The place balanced nostalgia with something new, and it showed for us loyal patrons. But less than six months after the rebrand, the team has announced that 1939 Singapore will cease operations for good at the end of May.

They haven’t said why, and maybe we won’t get the full story.

What we do know is that all four floors will be running till the very end. If you’ve been meaning to revisit, or never got around to checking it out, this is your last two weeks’ notice to do so.

For regulars like me, it’s a farewell to more than a building. It’s goodbye to countless burgers, rooftop drinks, and spontaneous nights that started with “let’s just go for one.”

So if you’ve ever been a part of the Potato Head or the 1939 Singapore crowd, now’s the time to raise a glass one more time.
