A Guide to Kallang Ice World for a Scrape-Free Sesh

It’s hard to dream of becoming an ice skater when you live in a tropical country like Singapore. I’ve known that from the very start, when I first watched the movie Ice Princess as a kid. At the time, there were just not that many skating rinks here!

And it seems like the number keeps going down, because now, we’re down to the last skating rink standing in Singapore: Kallang Ice World. This is where I first learned how to skate, and I still keep coming here as an adult. That’s why this place will always have a special place in my heart.

Curious about visiting this wonderful skating rink? Here’s a guide to Kallang Ice World that I wrote for you.

What to Expect

Limited Time Slots

– From: seowie

The first thing you’ll notice when you visit Kallang Ice World—or even if you’re just looking it up—is that the rink operates in a series of limited time slots. These time slots run two hours, and they’re separated by 20-minute intervals. Oh, and for each time slot, only 150 people are allowed in.

I know that at first, this setup may seem annoying, especially when you’re already at the rink but your preferred slot is already full, so you need to wait for the next one. But over time, I’ve come to appreciate this setup because it definitely helps with the crowd.

Every time I come here, no matter the time slot, the rink isn’t super crowded, allowing everyone to enjoy ice-skating without worrying about bumping into someone else. Controlling the crowd also means that there are enough lockers for everyone, so you can keep your valuables safe before skating around.

Sizeable Rink

– From: ahjoomahan

The second thing you’ll notice when you come here is the rink—it’s pretty big. I haven’t seen an Olympic-sized ice rink in the flesh, but I have to say that the one at Kallang Ice World is pretty close.

The size gives everyone enough room to skate and do all sorts of manoeuvres. Beginners do tend to flock along the perimeter, clinging onto the rails like their lives depend on it.

But if you’re more skilled, you have the entire rink at your disposal. Show off that new flying spin skill you just learned or practice a triple axel (be careful, though). You can even do that TikTok trend of ice skaters skating dramatically to the climax of “The Winner Takes It All” (the version sung by Meryl Streep).

Skating Aids and Classes for Newbies

– From: esmeraldaputri_

New to ice skating? Don’t worry, you can learn the skill here! In fact, a good chunk of skaters here are beginners, so you’ll definitely feel right at home.

To make your experience better, you might want to rent a skating aid, which you can hold onto as you’re skating. There’s the classic metallic walker, but they also have a seal-shaped one that’s just adorable.

The seal one is also great if you’re with children because they can ride on the body while you’re skating around. You’re bonding with your family while practising at the same time. Two birds with one stone, am I right?

If you’re serious about this sport, you might want to take any of the ice skating classes being offered at Kallang Ice World. They hold these classes often, and the only way to get more information is to call them. Don’t hesitate to do so; who knows, you might become the next icon in the figure skating world!
